When you have a speedy or Happy upgrade (floppy speeders) you can even write you're own code and download it into the drive. I think when you're are talking about changing the ROM in the drive it self then the 8-bit can also do this. The serial port already works normally 19.200 and with speeders up-to 96.000... The Atari drives have no DOS, and this had brought us some nice DOS programs like SpartaDOS (msdos like) with an other way of reading/writing disks then Atari. You even can define your own format. I think because there was no DOS inside the rom makes the drives less intelligent... All the logic is inside.
