Hello Mark, > Forgive my non-familiarity of the C64 disk drive but > how would the server running from its ROM know about > the filesystem layout? Isn't the drive only working at > a sector level? The Atari's require a disk operating > system (DOS) to be booted into RAM to handle such things > as free/used sectors, directories etc. How the C64/1541 > handle this? That's exactly the difference between the CBM floppies and other floppies from the 8 bit era. The CBMs are full featured computers (6502, 6522 or 6526, ...) which handle all the disc stuff *including* the filesystem. The just receive a command "I want this or that file" and they answer with exactly this one. They would have been *very* great things if, yes, if they had not had that *** seriel line interface (not all but many of them). At least, since these were full-featured computers, one was able to write a good floppy-speeder to overcome this limit.
