Greg, thanks for the enlightening information! 

For some of the problems, the question is if fixing them is actually a
solution. Bugs that disappear when reformatting the source will likely
reappear after changes. Changes in "official" parts of the linuxdoc packages
will get overwritten if a new package is installed.

So, can we live with the bugs for now (maybe by removing one or more of the
possible target formats) or is it better to choose another tool in the long
run?
