You cannot know how they will be displayed in someone else's mail-reader. You cannot know which font will be used (what is its size, is it mono-spaced or proportional, etc.), and you cannot know how that reader will show tabs. So, some E-Mail programs will convert tabs into a group of spaces when you are creating your mail.
