It seems that this does not work.  Perhaps there is
something done during crt0 or a constructor that
depends either the SAVMSC or SDLSTL having proper
values?

Anyhow, thanks anyway.  I'm going to try to approach
this in a different way.  Opening the editor from with
crt0.s, before the library constructors run DOES work.
 That is how I solved the problem initially, but I
want a more elegant solution.  I think adding a
conditional (on a command line switch) piece of code
to the maxflash kit (exeunpak.a65 specifically) is the
way to go.

I have no doubt that your procedure works (my program
runs fine from DOS with the _txtinit call in it),
however it doesn't solve my particular problem. So
whether or not you add it to the library is up to you.
