There are currently two (active) branches in CVS: Head and 2.9.1. Changes in
the head branch will be part of the next major release (2.10). Changes in the
2.9.1 branch will go into the next maintenance release, provided there is one.
Larger (non bugfix) changes should always go into the head branch, breaking
something in a maintenance release is not a good idea.

I vote for removing it. Exiting main() should always be the same as calling
exit(). Other functionality can be achieved by calling special functions.
