Some shops, such as Olimex in Bulgaria and MVPCB in Germany, manufacture circuit boards with very small set-up cost from files made with Cadsoft's Eagle software, which is distributed without source code for Win32 and Linux/x86, free for non-commercial use. For the C2N232 device (my versatile RS-232 interface for the Commodore cassette port), the board cost at MVPCB would be around 2 EUR per board, including shipping. I'm still waiting for some more orders before ordering the next batch of 100 boards, though. > By doing the whole design on one custom PCB (i.e., not using the > EmbeddedEthernet.com board), the price of the device could be cut. Things like the EmbeddedEthernet board are good for prototyping, but it's not that hard to solder surface-mounted components on a professionally made board with through-coppered holes and solder resist.
