It might not be too expensive to use a commercial PCB shop either.  Some 
shops, such as Olimex in Bulgaria and MVPCB in Germany, manufacture 
circuit boards with very small set-up cost from files made with 
Cadsoft's Eagle software, which is distributed without source code for 
Win32 and Linux/x86, free for non-commercial use.

For the C2N232 device (my versatile RS-232 interface for the Commodore 
cassette port), the board cost at MVPCB would be around 2 EUR per board, 
including shipping.  I'm still waiting for some more orders before 
ordering the next batch of 100 boards, though.

True.  Things like the EmbeddedEthernet board are good for prototyping, 
but it's not that hard to solder surface-mounted components on a 
professionally made board with through-coppered holes and solder resist.
