Pros:
- Could be something cross-target
- Is already done this way in GEOS (both on CBM and Apple)

Cons:
- High overhead in C lbrary
- Mapping of drives to letters hard to remember even after being used
to letter-colon syntax

I personally think the cons clearly predominate.
