As I understand the OP asks about supporting both the old and the new
syntax. That's an issue I have with Contiki too. As long as there's no
new official cc65 release it doesn't make sense to adapt Contiki build
files to cc65 changes made. Think i.e. of the radically changed (aka
greatly improved) dependency file handling.

This however means that one needs profound knowledge on recent cc65
toolchain syntax changes and the Contiki build system to successfully
build Contiki with a cc65 snapshot - I fear that skill profile fits
only me ;-)
