This is a) certainly true and b) in fact the first thing that cam into
my mind when I read the OP.

However I'm afraid that extending the discussion into that direction
won't bring us forward as I don't see a) Uz doing it anytime soon and
b) someone else being able/willing/entitled to do it.

Having that said here are nevertheless some examples of usecases that
come into my mind:
- C64 soft 80 col conio
- C64 speedup disk io (i.e. ETH64)
- More finegrain support for the different Apple II models
