If you use ca65/ld65 as "pure" assembly language tools (as I do too)
than you can use .zeropage in any way you like - or do I miss your
point here ?!?

Was it? If yes then it has come a long way since then. It has loads of
features not used by cc65 - just think i.e. about the 65816 support...
