I personally would consider the "integrated startup code" a release
trigger. Just recall how many times you explained to a newbie in this
list that he had forgotten to link in the startup code. It's just not
the expected behaviour - therefore this change is a big one from the
usability perspective.

You name it. Would it be an option to include the standalone startup
code object files in the distribution although they're now part of the
library? New makefiles / new users could ignore them while they would
keep old makefiles working - wouldn't they?
