[cc65] What's in atmos.lib?

What is atmos.lib  for?
I inspected it with ar65 -l and seems to hold the same files as nes.lib 
( for the NES platform in particular, maybe it happens the same with 
other targets )

I read somewhere that I had to link to both nes.lib and atmos.lib to 
build for the NES, but then tried linking without atmos.lib and worked 
the same.

mos sounds to me as having something to do with MOS 6502? then being a 
general thing not specific to any target?
