Then have a look at BCX, it does exactly that for the Win32 plattform.
It happily tooks basic, converts it to c and feeds that to either
lcc-w32 or Pelles-C.

So, this idea isnt that far fetched.
But for a real good one cc65 would need one nifty feature that the core
dev team seems to avoid like hot steam -> float.....
