I even commented out the part of the routine that
checks to see if E: is already opened as part of my
testing.  It did seem to work.

According to De Re Atari, E: is not opened until AFTER
the cartridge init vector has ran.  The AtariMax
cartridge exe menu program runs via the init vector. 
I think it could easily be changed to use the run
vector instead.  I will try that out as soon as I can.

Yes, I can probably do that too.
