The library does now support the full list of scanf functions. _scanf is somewhat more standards compliant than before, but it's still a hack in some places and needs more testing. I will put some more time into testing this weekend, but since you have this program that seems to need scanf, my hope is that you could give the current version a try and report any problems:-) Packages containing the new functions are available from the ftp server.
