Nothing of all this happens on the C64, so I do assume it has to do with the implementation of the break functions for the apple. Please have a look at the file libsrc/apple2/break.s and check if the implementation is correct. There may be subtle differences between the different apple models. As far as I remember, the original file was once written by me using "Mapping the Apple II" - and I'm definitely not an apple specialist.
