Ullrich - Thanks for your reply. Sunplus is a little odd about guarding their datasheets. Almost no one has heard of them because of it, I think, though they have a number of big customers in the toy industry and now higher markets too. I'm asking the folks at Sunplus and Spectrum Rep (their US representatives) about a C compiler. I'll let you know if I find anything interesting--and if I manage to get cc65 to work.
