Thanks, that gives me something to work with. I suspect that the buggy
code is mixed with a bunch of conio code - I don't suppose anyone has
a conio -> curses library, or something like that..? Might have to
hack around a bit at work today...

Oh, and what was the way to check how much free heap space there is?

Trying to resurrect buggy old code is a PITA!
