i've thought about this regarding the NES aswell.... my idea was to first 
create an extended memory driver for it (for accessing banked rom, buffered 
ram etc) and then write a filesystem that works on top of it .... the cool 
thing would be that its totally portable to other targets (could be used with 
the REU on a c64 for example) and once its done, you only had to implement a 
extended memory driver for each new target.
