The Action Replay uses all of the $de00-$dfff space. The $de00-$deff area is used for a write-only bank and mode selection register (originally 6 bits), and the $df00-$dfff area is mapped to on-cartridge RAM or ROM whenever the cartridge is enabled. I suspect that there are similar incompatibility issues with other memory expansions. But it would be nice at least to have a library that allows all expansions to be accessed in a similar way. Then it wouldn't be so difficult to make programs support a wide range of expansions, one at a time.
