Let's call it an unfortunate implementation :-)

I didn't really think about it when implementing the feature and you're not
the first person complaining about it. If I remember correctly, there's a
similar issue with the generation of output files. In the meantime, I think it
should be changed, but there are more serious problems, so I cannot tell when.
